Getting Ready for TUNE UP 2015!

_DSC6713We are excited about the 2015 TUNE UP worship band gathering happening this Saturday, August 8. You’re receiving this email because you have been registered as a participant for the event. Here are a few details as you prepare for the event…

Location: TUNE UP is being held at Westbury United Methodist Church (5200 Willowbend Blvd, Houston, TX 77096). There are two main entrances into the parking lot, which is located behind the church. Access to the parking lot is off West Bellfort and on Cedarhurst. Once you arrive, look for the sign that says “Main Entrance.”

What to bring: If you’re a guitarist, feel free to bring your acoustic, electric, or bass guitar (no amplifiers, please). This is optional though; don’t feel like you have to bring your instrument. You might also like to bring a Bible and something to take notes with.

Schedule: You can view the schedule for Saturdayhere. Check-in and registration begins at 9:00 AM, gathering music starts at 9:15 AM, and the event will start at 9:30 AM. The event will conclude by3:30 PM. A new feature this year is an optional post event. From 4:30 – 6:30 PM we will tour the campus of Houston’s First Baptist Church (7401 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024) to learn about their use of audio, video, and lighting in worship.

Tracks: When your group registered, you were signed up for an instrumental or vocal track. Please plan to attend the track you were registered for during the “instrumental track” option. After that, you are free to pick from the available options for the “conceptual track.” If you decide you’d like to switch instrumental tracks – no problem. You can view the track options here.

_DSC6649Instant Band: During the Instant Band session we will put together a band of volunteers and work out an arrangement of “When Peace like a River” (It Is Well with My Soul). The session will demonstrate the use of different voices (lead and harmony), varied instrumental textures, and making style/groove decisions. Our plan is to show how to quickly bring together musicians who have never played/sang together and prepare a song.

Food: Lunch is provided for this event. We’re sorry, but we don’t have a vegetarian or gluten free option. There will also be coffee and breakfast items available in the morning.

#TUNEUP15: If you share an Instagram or tweet from the event, please use the hashtag #TUNEUP15.

Thanks for joining us and we look forward to a great event on Saturday!

2014 TUNE UP Recap

_DSC6733_DSC6729On Saturday, August 9, 2014, the TUNE UP worship band gathering was held. Over 100 worship musicians, sound techs, and video techs assembled on the campus of Faith Lutheran Church in Bellaire, TX (Houston) for a multi-denominational training event. Hosting over 100 participants for the second year in a row, the event was organized by the Worship Excellence Team of the TX-LA Gulf Coast Synod (ELCA) to improve the quality of band-led worship in smaller churches.

The assembled musicians and techs represented 20 congregations including Lutheran, Nazarene, Presbyterian, United Methodist, and Non-Denominational churches. Churches that participated were both from the Houston vicinity and rural parts of Texas.

The schedule included times of worship, instrumental/vocal/tech tracks, and conceptual tracks. A team of track leaders with main speaker DeAndre Johnson (Westbury United Methodist Church) led worship. The instrumental tracks were divided by specific area (worship leader, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums, vocals, sound tech, and video tech). Each group gathered together for training and instruction specific to that instrument. Conceptual track offerings included sessions on arranging hymns for worship band, multicultural worship, and renewing the arts in worship. Additionally, a “Coaching for Bands” track was offered in which two church bands received feedback and help with their music from a panel of track leaders.

_DSC6645One attendee commented, “Once again, my team and I have learned and grown through your gathering.” Another responded that the information they received in their track was, “Incredibly useful.”

After a second successful gathering, we will likely offer the event again in the future. Watch the event website for details: TuneUpGathering.org.

Be a sponsor of TUNE UP

We are looking for churches and other organizations to help make the TUNE UP worship band gathering a success by donating toward the event. Your support of this event will help keep registration costs affordable for everyone.

For a $500 sponsorship, your church/organization would be listed as a sponsor on the promotional material as well as the event website. Additionally, you can send as many members from your worship team and congregation to the event at no further registration cost. We know that many churches see the fruits of offering a quality worship music experience and would like to invest in making this possible for other churches. We would greatly appreciate your help in providing financial support to further equip and enhance worship band ministry throughout our synod and beyond.
